The transformation of Wellington’s former Courtenay Central complex into The Court is redefining the site as a new entertainment destination in the heart of the city.
The redevelopment incorporates a comprehensive seismic upgrade. Working within the existing building fabric, Buchan’s architecture and interior design teams have adopted an adaptive reuse strategy that reduces disruption, cost and embodied carbon while enabling a contemporary reimagining of the structure.
The Court will introduce a blend of cinemas, retail, dining and hospitality, reinstating the precinct as a key entertainment hub within Wellington’s CBD.
The exterior design simplifies the existing frontage with a two‑tone colour palette and introduces a perforated metal keystone screen that unites the two façades, acting as a subtle daytime feature and a bold illuminated marker at night.
Once complete, The Court will be a resilient and welcoming destination, bringing renewed life and energy back to Wellington’s entertainment heart.
Project completion is scheduled for the end of 2026.
