Biyal-a Armstrong Creek Library receives 2026 Australian Library Design Awards commendation

Biyal-a Armstrong Creek Library has received a Commendation in the Public Library category at the Australian Library and Information Association’s 2026 Design Awards.

The national awards recognise outstanding library design across Australia – celebrating spaces that bring communities together, support lifelong learning and create opportunities for creativity, connection and inclusion.

Designed by Buchan in collaboration with Geelong Regional Library Corporation, City of Greater Geelong and Wadawurrung Traditional Owners Aboriginal Corporation, Biyal-a is purpose-built library and community hub shaped by inclusive design, sustainability, and cultural storytelling, for one of Australia’s fastest-growing communities.

The first civic landmark in Armstrong Creek, Biyal-a is a contemporary library and community hub

“With Biyal-a Armstrong Creek Library, we wanted to create more than a building. Through genuine co-design, we’ve shaped a place that reflects shared values, supports lifelong learning, and fosters a deep sense of belonging.” – Aleksander Borek

“The library has exceeded expectations as a highly functional space for staff and a warm, welcoming environment for the community. Visitors consistently praise it as a tremendous resource. The ability to operate outside staffed hours has only added to that, keeping it a vital hub for learning, collaboration and connection, day and night.” – Justine Hanna, Manager Library Service Operations, Geelong Regional Libraries Corporation
