Design for good – a sustainable housing vision

Among the many projects we’re incredibly proud of this year, our design partnership with Housing and Relief Charity is one that will give back for years to come.

Buchan has designed a multi-residential, affordable and community housing scheme in Sydney’s south to provide temporary accommodation and emergency shelter for hundreds of people in distress each year.

Located near a major transport hub and town centre, the proposed development exemplifies a model for financially sustainable housing that supports low- to moderate-income residents, essential workers, and those facing financial disadvantage or socio-economic hardship.

The development will also serve as a base for the Charity’s free-of-charge or low-cost community food, furniture and clothing market, extending its impact beyond housing to address immediate community needs.

“Projects like this remind us why we do what we do. As architects, we hold a unique ability to shape places that uplift lives, and it’s a privilege to use that talent in service of social and community good.”

“Delivering high-quality, affordable housing is one of the most powerful ways we can influence the future of our cities for the benefit of both people and the planet.” – Anthony Palamara, Principal

The joy and purpose this project has brought our team is a testament to the value of giving back and to the impact thoughtful design can have on those who call these places home.

“We’re grateful to the Rockdale community and the design team at Buchan for supporting this much-needed housing initiative, which will provide sustainable relief from today’s hardships and create a pathway to independence. This redevelopment is more than stable housing – it’s an opportunity for people to recover, rebuild and thrive.” – James Storr, Volunteer Director, Housing and Relief Charity Ltd
