The $700 million redevelopment of the historic General Post Office creates a new benchmark for mixed-use urban developments and a new civic precinct in the heart of Sydney.
Buchan’s design integrates the landmark historic GPO classical renaissance style architecture with contemporary elegance. We added a 26-level A-grade office tower, 31-level Westin Sydney Hotel tower and 2,700sqm of retail space. The three elements link by a glazed grand courtyard with a 30 metre-high glass roof that provides natural light and a wonderful link between the old and the new.
A restaurant court is located on the lower ground level of the grand courtyard. Below the courtyard is a 1,000-person ballroom offering a charming event space that indulges guests in the stylish grandeur of a bygone era.
The award-winning design preserves the elegant street-level colonnade, impressive sandstone façade and the famous clock tower. The light-filled interiors worthy of its location at the best address in Australia.
The original building on the site has immense architectural significance within the Martin Place streetscape and is still commonly referred to as ‘the GPO’.
