The $46M Grandstand redefines the race day experience. It is bold, modern and dynamic, with the facilities and flexibility to enable it to function as a year-round, multiuse entertainment and function venue. The design builds on the tradition of Flemington Racecourse, while providing patrons with state-of the-art amenities and unimpeded sightlines which set the new stand apart from other grandstands around the world.
The Grandstand comprises five levels of seating, wagering, dining and beverage service, committee rooms and back of house facilities. There are 6900 viewing seats, 5100 of which are behind glass. Sections of the glazing can be opened on fine days, allowing the trackside atmosphere to extend inside. Whether seated or strolling on the promenade areas above the seating, racegoers will be able to keep an eye on the action. Large screens on each level add to the race day experience.
The new Grandstand has enabled the VRC to increase its membership from 12 000 to over 20 000 and to attract the young racegoers who represent the future of the sport. The Members’ Grandstand received the 2001 Architecture Award, Commercial Category, from the Royal Australian Institute of Architects.
